Dementia is a complex condition that creates significant challenges for individuals with the condition and their families. At Elderwood, we understand the unique needs of those living with dementia, and we are committed to providing comprehensive care that allows them to live fulfilling lives. One integral component of our dementia care program is Occupational Therapy (OT). OT plays a crucial role in improving functional and cognitive abilities. In this blog, we will explore the invaluable contributions of our Occupational Therapists, and highlight four key ways in which they enhance care for residents with dementia.
1. Functional Maintenance: Empowering Independence
Occupational Therapists at Elderwood work closely with residents with dementia to address functional impairments and promote independence in daily activities. They utilize evidence-based techniques and customize care plans based on each resident's skills, preferences, and cognitive levels. By breaking down tasks into manageable steps and employing strategies tailored to individual needs, OTs empower residents to dress themselves, maintain personal hygiene, and engage in routine tasks more independently. This focus on functional maintenance enhances residents' self-esteem and preserves their dignity, fostering a sense of accomplishment.
2. Collaboration with Speech Therapists: Enhancing Communication
Our OTs often collaborate with Speech Therapists to provide comprehensive care for residents with dementia. In cases where verbal communication abilities decline, residents may experience frustration and isolation. OTs and Speech Therapists work hand in hand to develop strategies that improve communication, such as using alternative communication methods or incorporating visual cues. By addressing communication difficulties, residents can maintain meaningful connections, engage in social interactions, and express their needs and emotions effectively.
3. Activities Programming: Stimulating Cognitive Function
“At Elderwood, our robust activities program complements Occupational Therapy interventions by promoting cognitive stimulation and engagement among residents. Our dedicated staff closely observes residents for any functional or cognitive changes, which inform the development of personalized care plans,” said Sabrina Wilson, Program Director at Elderwood Village at St. Gregory Court.
The activities provided cater to residents' skills, abilities, and perceptions, following the Seasons Memory Care program framework. By incorporating nationally recognized assessment tools, we ensure that each resident receives appropriate and personalized care, interaction, communication, and therapy. Engaging activities help exercise cognitive processes, stimulate sensory experiences, and encourage reminiscence, offering residents opportunities to explore their five senses.
“Recently, Elderwood Village at St. Gregory Court opened an all-new sensory unit, specifically designed to cater to individuals with varying levels of dementia. In this dedicated space, residents can engage in a range of sensory activities that stimulate their five senses. From sensory gardening to puzzles and other interactive programs, we strive to create a multi-sensory environment that promotes cognitive stimulation and sensory experiences. Additionally, we have implemented a sensory balance program to support our residents with dementia in regulating their internal clocks and promoting a sense of calm and well-being. This program focuses on helping residents wind down and rest after mealtimes, allowing them to recharge and be more alert and engaged later in the day,” added Wilson.
4. Physical Activity: Promoting Mobility and Independence
Maintaining physical mobility and preventing falls are essential aspects of dementia care. Occupational Therapists at Elderwood adopt a dementia-capable care approach that offers alternatives to traditional exercise. By incorporating enjoyable and familiar tasks into residents' daily routines, such as arranging flowers or folding laundry, OTs engage residents in purposeful activities that simultaneously challenge their fine motor skills. These activities provide an avenue for physical movement, helping residents improve mobility, reduce the risk of falls, and foster a sense of independence.
Occupational Therapy plays a crucial role in enhancing dementia care at Elderwood by addressing functional and cognitive abilities. The collaboration among OTs, Speech Therapists, and other clinical professionals - along with our activities programming, contributes to the development of comprehensive care plans tailored to each resident's unique needs. By focusing on functional maintenance, improving communication, stimulating cognitive function, and promoting physical activity, Elderwood delivers and environment in which residents with dementia can live their lives to the fullest.
"At Elderwood, we understand the unique needs of individuals with dementia, and our Occupational Therapists play a vital role in improving their quality of life. Through customized care plans and a person-centered approach, our OTs empower residents to maintain their independence and dignity,” said Wilson.
